We could have written some pithy PR platitudes for this page that makes us sound super smart. Instead we decided to skip the usual business babble and just tell it like it is.

Mark Gell and Patrick Southam started GSG Counsel in 2010 because we wanted to move on from working for large companies. Don’t get us wrong. We relished the challenges of managing the communications functions for some of Australia’s biggest companies like BHP, NAB, Lend Lease, Telstra, Boral, TNT, ING and Foster’s Brewing, among others.

But something was missing. We wanted the freedom to run our own race. We also wanted to use our years of experience working for big brands to help companies communicate better and protect their reputations when the proverbial hits the fan (and we’ve seen a lot of the proverbial).

And we wanted to really make a difference for our clients. If that sounds trite we’re sorry – it’s actually true!

We set up GSG Counsel to focus on three core streams – corporate communications, issues and crisis management and investor communications. We don’t like to boast, but we know these functions inside out. We’ve been doing them for a long time (yeah, we’re older).

Every day we help our clients grow their business, protect their reputation and deliver great communication and content to the media, customers, investors and employees.

We work across many industry sectors as described below. If you’d like to have a chat about your communication needs, please get in touch.

We have experience creating and executing product launches, media events, social media campaigns and lifestyle PR programs for automotive and aftermarket manufacturers, suppliers and dealer groups. We also understand how to craft compelling content about current industry issues such as driverless cars, emissions technologies, automotive design and driver safety.

Financial Services

Our knowledge and expertise of the banking and insurance landscape is second to none. We have worked for, or advised, some of Australia’s major financial services and insurance brands, including NAB, MLC, Commonwealth Bank, Visa, Comminsure, ING and Citibank.

Infrastructure and Engineering

We have managed communications and provided strategic counsel for complex infrastructure projects like Brisbane’s $6.7 billion Airport Link toll road and the closure of the Caltex Oil Refinery in Sydney. Our expertise includes community relations and managing multiple stakeholders such as employees, customers, media, governments, and local communities around the project.

Government and Public Sector

Our work with government and public sector organisations, plus agencies, help them communicate the impact of public policy announcements, drive public awareness and conduct education campaigns. We are registered lobbyists at state and federal level, and several staff members have worked for state and federal governments and for public sector organisations.

Professional Services

Financial services companies, recruitment agencies and management consultants and more rely on our knowledge, expertise and media relationships to position them in front of the right audiences, and to share the stories that matter.

GSG Counsel develops bespoke strategic communications programs that highlight differentiators, enhance credibility and clearly communicate the value of the services offered to clients.

GSG Counsel consultants have held senior communications and public affairs roles with Telstra and Optus. We understand the industry, the technology developments and evolving market issues.

We develop content for multiple communications channels – digital, media, analysts, events, and industry associations – that underpins the best telecom PR campaigns and delivers commercial success.

Manufacturing and Industry

We relish the diversity of the manufacturing and industry sector. Our broad experience includes managing corporate communications projects for global engineering and resources firm WorleyParsons, and Australia’s biggest FMCG contract manufacturer Jalco Group.

We understand how to develop and deliver cut-through communications that will build your business and enhance and protect your hard-earned reputation in a competitive sector.

Resources & Mining Services

Our consultants have a thorough understanding of the local mining and resources sector, from the operating environment, commercial profit-drivers, to the current social, political and policy challenges. We have represented resources clients with mining interests in Australia and overseas, including companies that are required to navigate state and federal regulatory/political hurdles to obtain mining licenses.

Working with commercial and residential property developers and property managers, we provide a complete PR and marketing service to help boost new business leads, sell residential properties and lease office and retail space. We develop strategic campaigns to change perceptions of areas, making them more desirable places to live, work, spend time or invest. We achieve that through a mix of careful messaging, media relations, and creating a buzz online through social media and digital videos, and planning and delivering marketing events.

Consumers are more savvy than ever, and brands have to work even harder to achieve sales and build customer loyalty. This reality underpins our approach to consumer PR and communications for our clients. Our ultimate goal is to help our clients increase brand awareness and drive sales. It’s that simple.

We achieve this by creating positive media exposure, designing events and developing digital and social campaigns to build consumer loyalty.
